親指を操り、一心に手紙を打つ中学生や高校生。そんな姿を、街で見かけるたびに、私たちは、ほほ笑みたくなるのです。時にうれしそうな、時に真剣なその眼差しは、万年筆やペンを手にしている人の眼差しと同じだ、と。思いを言葉にすることを楽しんでいる人が、ここにもいる、と。ほんの少し前、「活字離れ」が心配されていたこの国で、毎日、何通もメールという手紙を書き、ブログという日記を書く人が増えている。「この気持ち、あの人に届くだろうか」「この考え、伝わるだろうか」迷いながら考えながら、言葉を選び、文章を綴る人たちがいる。筆記具という道具を90年つくり、書く人たちの隣にいた者として、そのことが、ただうれしいのです。そして、あなたの言葉を、あなたの文字で、したためたくなった時。私たちのペンは、伝えようと思います。その胸の内を、その体温を、言葉にできない大切な何かを。
